The future of the US, at least the next four years, will be highly depending on Georgia runoff election US Senate election held today, January 5, 2021. At the end of the last week for people to vote in-person early for the Georgia Senate runoff, on December 31, 2020, the early voting counts had reached a record in Georgia history, with more that 3 millions havining already casted their vote. The massive turnout had scored how important and historic the outcome will. AfroAmerica Network correspondents have been visiting some of the voting sites in the Atlanta metro area. Despite the increasing controversies, infights within the GOP, legal challenges against the US Presidential elections, COVID-19 pandemic, today's turnout is massive.
The polling stations visited by AfroAmerica Network correspondents today on January 5, 2021 Election Day, include the largest polling sites in the Atlanta metro area and surroundings. They all are ready: the in-person voters on lines appear to be very eager to cast their votes. The two Democratic challengers, Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossof remain in a tight race against the two current Republican senators. Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock is running against Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler and Democrat Jon Ossoff against Republican Senator David Perdue. David Perdue, 71 vs Jon Ossof, 33: Two Generations Apart
Republican David Perdue, 71 years old is running against Democrat Jon Ossoff, 33. John Ossoff, a documentary filmmaker, is a new comer, energetic, young millennial, and confident whose political agenda is clear: progressiste to the core, for civil rights, for racial justice and police reform, ready to help the poor, supporting rights for women and LGBT and many more.
On the other side, David Perdue is a politician who has spent the past six years as a Georgia senator. His term ended on Sunday, January 3, 2021, but he hopes to win reelection and come back with even a more conservative agenda.
Sen. Kelly Loeffler, 50 vs Raphael Warnock, 33: Wealth vs Activism and Potential First Woman vs First Black Man Georgia Senator
Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler, 50, is running against Democrat Raphael Warnock, 51. The two cannot be even more far apart. Kelly Loeffler, with her husband, is a billionaire who grew up in and was raised on her family's corn and soybean farm. Sen. Kelly Loeffler was appointed to fill a vacant Senate seat in 2020. If she wins, she will become the first woman ever elected senator from Georgia.
Raphael Warnock, a pastor of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. ’s former church, is a Black man who grew up in public housing along with 12 siblings. If he wins, he will be the first Black senator elected from Georgia.
Georgia: A Battle Ground
President Trump, US President-Elect Biden, Vice President Mike Pence and Vice_President Elect Kamala Harris have been campaigning for their respective candidates and made several trips to Georgia, up to January 4, 2021.
The runoff election in Georgia was triggered after no candidate in either of the two Senate races won more than 50% of the vote in the November 3, 2020 general election.
The results are expected to face legal challenges, raise controversies, and highten already high emotions for Democrats, Republicans, and Indepedents. In the end, Georgia Senate runoff election has captivated the US and World attention, as it will determine how the US politics and policies will be formulated and activated in at least the four years to come.
