On April 5, 2024 around 10:23 AM, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake was recorded 5 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was about 45 miles away from New York City. However, the earthquake effects were felt in the states of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhodes Island, and Massachusetts.
Earthquake Impact: Shakings, Tremors, and More to Assess.
There were reports of shaking buildings, furniture, and floors. However, no major disruptions or damage have been reported in any of the states, so far.
The state and local leaders of the three states said that the earthquake quake was felt throughout New York and that the assessment of the impacts and any potential damages are on-going.
The New York governor, Kathy Hochul, posted on social media that the earthquake was felt throughout the state, saying that “My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day,”
There were reports that the impact of the earthquake was felt in the neighboring states of Connecticut and Massachusetts, all way to the city of Boston and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The latest similar earthquake in the region happened in 2011. On August 23, 2011, the earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.9 hit the East of the USA and Canada, from the state of Georgia all way to Canada, with the epicenter located in the state of Virginia. The earthquake was the strongest quake to hit the East coast, since 1944.
The major earthquake that hit the East Coast in 2011 struck just outside Washington, DC, with the tremors felt from Georgia all way to Maine and the border of Canada.
The most powerful earthquake to hit the East Coast in recorded US history was on August 31, 1886. With a magnitude of 7.3, the earthquake devastated Charleston, South Carolina, killing 60 people and causing damages to the most structures in the the city and expanding with destructions to many states in the East Coast and the states of Alabama, Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Structural damages were reported several hundred miles from Charleston, including in central Alabama, central Ohio, eastern Kentucky, southern Virginia and western West Virginia.
