The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Félix Antoine Tshisekedi has appointed  the Prime Minister for his long awaited government. The new Prime Minister is Judith Tuluka Suminwa.  Her appointment is being hailed as a major step forward in the DRC:  she has become the first female Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi appointed Judith Suminwa Tuluka to replace Sama Lukonde,  who has recent retired from the position of Prime Minister, more than three months after the presidential elections.  The appointment  Judith Suminwa Tuluka reminds of another progress made in a neighboring country when Burundi President, General Evariste Ndayishimiye, appointed  Ms. Imelde Sabushimike as the first Twa woman to be part of a government in any country in Africa (see here: Imelde Sabushimike, First Twa Woman in a Government in Africa : Burundi makes history).

Judith Tuluka Suminwa was previously the Minister in charge of planning.  She also as an advisor in  President's office and was at some point a government staff in the Ministry of Public Finance.

Judith Suminwa  is a member of the UDPS, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi's party. She hails from Kongo_Central Province. As Minister in charge of planning and advisor to the president, she has been focusing on projects in Eastern Congo, where on-going wars and insecurity, due to the  invasion of the Rwandan troops under the cover of M23 rebels, have halted any progress.    She is expected to announce the new government in upcoming days. The new government will be coalition of several political parties across the country.

President  Felixi Tshisekedi was elected for a second term in December 2023. There have been  concerns regarding the dynamics behind the long delay in appointing the Prime Minister  and forming a new government, in a country facing so many security, economic, humanitarian,  and social issues, especially while the Ministers before the presidential elections in December 2023  had resigned from their functions but have continued to serve as interim ministers.

In her first official statement  following  her appointment and after her audience with the Head of State at the African Union City (AU), in Kinshasa,   Judith Suminwa expressed her commitment during her first official statement.

That we can, on the basis of the commitments that [President Felix Tshisekedi] defined at the time of his inauguration, work on peace and development in the DRC so that the Congolese people can benefit from this country from the resources that have been given to us by the Lord,” said  Prime Minister Judith Suminwa.

Prime Minister  Judith Suminwa also expressed her compassion towards the Congolese facing conflicts, particularly in the East of the DRC and in Maï-Ndombe:

My thoughts go to the East and to all corners of the country which today are faced with conflicts with enemies who,  sometimes, are  hidden, and do not reveal themselves, but  that we will find and uncover, that we will definitely chase down one way or another. I think of all these populations and my heart goes out to them.”

Judith Suminwa  is expected to  publish the names of the cabinet ministers in the new government, in upcoming days few days.  Being hailed as the first woman, she has promised  to make major changes and lead a more efficient and effective government.
