An internal inquiry by the US Central Intelligence Agency, CIA,  has confirmed that the C.I.A spied on Senate Panel members charged of investigating interrogation methods and detention programs. According to the inquiry, CIA officers accessed a computer network used by the Senate Intelligence Committee.

According to reports leaked in the US media, the CIA agents read e-mails and sent reports to the US Justice Department. The admission of spying by the CIA confirms what the US Senator Dianne Feinsteinof California, who is the Democratic Party Chair of the Senate INtelligence Committee has been saying all along. In March, Senator Feinstein complained that the CIA was monitoring the communications of US Senators.

At the time, the CIA Director, John Brennan denied the allegations and confirmed that the agency does not spy on American representatives

On Thursday, July 31, 2014, the CIA spokespamn issued a statement  confrming the spying report and added that CIA Director John O. Brennan, had apologized to Senator Feinstein and the committee’s ranking Republican Party representative, Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia. John Brennan also promised to set up an internal accountability board to review the issue and corrective measures. According to the statement, the accountability board will be led by the former Democratic senator, Evan Bayh of Indiana,  and would be able to recommend "potential disciplinary measures” and “steps to address systemic issues" at the US Agency.
