During his reign over the purely African empire of Mali, he showed an unprecedented political and economical vision, accumen in organization and administration, and a savvy planning of the future. Through his vision, many achievements were made in Mali, including the expansion of trade in Timbuktu, the founding of the University of Sankore, the architectural innovations in Gao, Timbuktu, and Niani. With new technologies, he pushed for building The Gao mosque with burnt bricks, the first use of such advanced construction material in West Africa and improved the transportation using camels and chariots.
Although some sources, using unreliable approaches estimate his wealth to be equivalent to $400 billion based on today's valuation, more credible sources rather estimate his wealth to be well above US $130 trillion. This is the wealth never reached by any other individual in the World, to date, including Mongol emperor Genghis Khan, The founder of the Roman empire Augustus Caesar ot Catherine the Great, the longest reigning female Russian monarch.
Mansa Musa's riches were shown to the world during his pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324, in the 17th year of his reign. His pilgrimage took him and his lavish caravan through several kingdoms in Africa, all way to Mecca. The caravan included around 60,000 men wearing fine clothes of silk and golden jewels and carrying staffs made in precious metals and 80 camels carrying each hundreds of pounds of gold.
He traveled from Niani, Mali to Cairo, Egypt and from Cairo to Mecca. His caravan went through several kingdoms, including Walata (Oualâta) in current Mauritania and Tuat, in current Algeria.
Using his riches and unabated generosity, Mansa Musa increased his reputation around the world powerful empires of the time.
