American Serena Williams, the former World woman tennis champion has won semi-finals against German Julia Gorges (6-2 6-4) in Wimbledon Open. She will face German Angelique Kerber on Saturday July 14, 2018. If she wins, Serena will equal Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 grand slam singles titles. It will also be a wonderful gift, as the first grand-slam title after giving birth in September 2017.
After the semi-final win, Serena Williams said: “I don't have anything to lose and I feel I can play so free. That's what I'm doing I'm enjoying every moment."
Wimbledon tournament happens just 10 months after Serena almost died, while giving birth. She has played four tournaments since her return to Tennis championships.
Before Wimbledon, Serena, number one before giving birth, was ranked 183 in the World. Her ranking was ultimately reviewed, following controversial debates. The rank was upgraded to 25 and seeded.
Since last year's Wimbledon tournament, Tennis fans had hoped to see Serena back and hoped to watch a double of the Williams sisters. However, the 36-year-old Serena's older sister, 37-year-old Venus face off will not happen, as Serena decided, allegedly based on her coach Patrick Mouratoglou's advice, to forgo the doubles and focus on singles.
Patrick Mouratoglou, had commented in broadcasts that Williams’ decision to play both singles and doubles at Roland Garros had left her susceptible to injuries.
Regardless, the Wimbledon 2018 ninals will be watched with anticipation. The Men semi-finals is still to be decided, with Kevin Anderson vs John Isner and Novak Djokovic vs Raphael Nadal.
